SaaS White Paper
Executive Summary
Market acceptance and growth for
SaaS has increased substantially over the past few years. According to IDC, this market will continue to grow at a 30% compound annual growth rate. This growth is increasingly highlighting a new interdependence between Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and Service Providers.
For ISVs, the nature of SaaS requires that applications support multi-tenancy, where one application installation supports more than one logically-partitioned group of users. Microsoft has noted that this “may be the most significant paradigm shift that an architect accustomed to designing isolated, single tenant applications has to make.” In addition, ISVs must rely on service providers (hosting or managed services) to complete their software offerings.
Service providers, on the other hand, must add strategic value to offer ISVs a more complete SaaS solution. Additionally, service providers have the business challenge of ensuring their infrastructure integrity, and adherence to their Service Level Agreements (SLAs), in an environment where an ISV designs and implements applications. This new interdependence between the ISV and the service provider highlights substantial gaps, both business and technological, that must be addressed to efficiently and profitably deliver SaaS.
A middleware layer is essential to bridge the gap between the traditional application environment of the ISV and the hosting infrastructure of the Service Provider.
Wrapped Apps™ Corporation's
Service Delivery Platform (
SDP) fills this gap. The
Wrapped Apps™
SDP provides a standardized platform that delivers applications to the end consumer without the need for the ISV to develop outside of their core competency. The Service Provider does not need to compromise their hosted environment to fulfill the need of the ISV.
Service delivery platforms can be categorized by their focus: vertical alignment, horizontal alignment, product centric, or general purpose.
Wrapped Apps™ Corporation is the first company to introduce a commercial grade, general purpose service delivery platform with
Virtual Multi-Tenancy™ (
VMT™) technology, and has several patents pending.
VMT™ enables the
SDP to isolate and duplicate the runtime environment of a deployed application. Once the runtime environment is well defined, the
Wrapped Apps™
SDP can take care of the SaaS features that the application does not implement natively and provide them for the application. With its
VMT™ component, the
Wrapped Apps™
SDP can support any application, regardless of whether its architecture was designed for the multi-tenant requirements of an on-demand environment. However,
VMT™ is only one of the key technological features that make the
Wrapped Apps™
SDP the essential choice to support any on-demand offering. The
Wrapped Apps™
SDP also provides a full range of platform features for all applications (single- and multi-tenant); including automated tenant provisioning, release management, scalability, service contract definition and management, alerts and notifications, and metering and monitoring.
The key component of the
Wrapped Apps™
SDP is the
AppsOnDemand™ Server. This software layer bridges the gap between the application environment of the ISV and the hosting infrastructure of the Service Provider. The
AppsOnDemand™ Server provides the business and operational services necessary to support a wide variety of applications and associated technologies.
The SaaS White Paper describes the full structure of the
Wrapped Apps™
Service Delivery Platform (
SDP) and features such as
Virtual Multi-Tenancy™ (
VMT™) that make it the essential choice to support any SaaS offering.
