Ottawa Business Journal continues to follow Wrapped Apps fortunes
Nov 15, 2005 - Ottawa Business Journal – Startup Checkup Part II - Brief Whatever their individual fortunes, change has clearly been the universal constant. Part II continues with Wrapped Apps Corp., Nimcat Networks Inc., Pleora Technologies Inc., Sipquest Inc., Soma Media Inc., Triacta, and Power Technologies Inc.
Company: Wrapped Apps Corp.
Founded: 1999
Employees: 10
VC to Date: Bootstrapped
"Somewhere down the road we'll look back and judge the wisdom of doing things this way. It's very hard because you pinch every penny and you tend to over-analyze decisions. It's not the easiest way to grow, but if you can do it organically, it's the best way." - Rob Lewis, CEO
Wrapped Apps CEO Rob Lewis says he is in negotiations with a giant provider to make a deal that would not only push his company forward, it would be lucrative enough to "mean big things for the company."
That said, he knows his business well enough to hold his cards close to his chest until the ink is dried on the contract.
Such is daily life for Wrapped Apps. Founded six years ago, it has been bootstrapped to this point, though the road hasn't always been easy.
Wrapped Apps has developed a product that Mr. Lewis has said will change the way the world uses software. It's an advanced enabling technology solution that allows organizations to access and deliver applications as a service, known in the industry as "software as services," or SaS.
Consumers can access what they want from wherever they are and be charged only for what they use because they can rent software applications on the Internet rather than be forced to purchase them outright from a store. This gives the customer flexibility, cost savings and the ability to do away with the purchase of a license.
"It's amazing what's happening in the industry," he said, pointing to Microsoft's Office Live in particular.
A Forty Under 40 honouree, Mr. Lewis has 25 years of experience in the financial services, retail and legal sectors. He's been directing Wrapped Apps since the beginning in 1999.
Wrapped Apps entered the market to enable applications to be delivered on-demand as a service over the web, but significantly expanded in 2003 by adding desktop productivity and enterprise-class applications to its enabling technology.
